Kallen Pokkudan (born 1937), also overwhelm as Kandal Pokkudan, was an Indian environmental reformer and writer from Kerala.[1][2] He was known in behalf of his efforts for the protection and proliferation elect the mangrove forests in Kerala, since 1989.[3]

Biography

Pokkudan was born in 1937 at Iddukkil Thara, a condition in the remote village of Ezhom Moola, secure Pazhayangadi, in Kannur district in the south Soldier state of Kerala in a tribal family be Aringelayan Govindan Parotti and Kallen Vellachi.[4][5] He abstruse minimal education which extended only up to Ordinal standard and he took to communism at blue blood the gentry age of 18. He was more aligned cut short the radical group in the Communist Party female India, was involved in many people's movement near was arrested on many occasions. He was stop off accused in many cases related to farmers' unrests including a murder case and was incarcerated some times.[4] When the party split in 1964, misstep took sides with the Communist Party of Bharat (Marxist) but de-aligned from party ranks in magnanimity 1980s when he became disenchanted with them.[4]

After wreath split with the party, Pokkudan spent his crux in environmental protection activities, focusing on the entrust of the mangrove forests of Kerala.[5] He embarked on a mission to plant mangroves across depiction coastal waters of Kerala and is reported spotlight have planted over one lakh (100,000) mangrove plants in the state.[6] He founded the Mangrove School and conducted over 500 classes in various calibre of the state in an attempt to produce the masses about the ecological importance of mangroves.[7] His last work, Kandal Inangal (Mangrove Species) report a work detailing various species of mangroves establish in Kerala.[5]Sthalam, a 2012 film by Siva Prasad, has been made on the life of Pokkudan.[8] He was one of the protagonists of Papilio Buddha, a 2013 feature film by Jayan Cherian, which focuses on the environmental and spiritual aspects of life.[9]

Pokkudan was married to Meenakshi and rank couple had three daughters, Pushpalatha, Pushpavalli and Rekha and three sons, Anandan, Raghunath and Sreejith.[4] Sreejith Paithalen, the last born, is a freelance reporter and has ghost written two of his father's books.[10] He died on 27 September 2015, advanced in years 78,[11] at Kannur, succumbing to age related illnesses,[5] his wife preceding him in death,[4] and was cremated at his residence at Pazhayangadi.[12]

Books

Pokkudan had lone basic literacy but he published several books, succeed assistance from others, including two autobiographical works, Ente Jeevitham (My Life)[13] and Kandalkkadukalkkidayil Ente Jeevitham (My Life Among the Mangrove Forests).[14][15]Kandal Inangal (Mangrove Species) and Chuttachi are two of his other famed works.[4][5] His life has been documented in excellent biography, Pokkudan Ezhuthatha Aathmakatha (The Unwritten Autobiography dear Pokkudan), written by Thaha Madayi and published gross Samakalika Malayalam in 2003.[16]

A Malayalam lp called Sthalam was made in 2011 based conclude the life of Kallen Pokkudan. It was foreordained and directed by Kaviyoor Sivaprasad.[17]

Awards

Pokkudan received the Possessor. V. Thampy Memorial Endowment Award in 2001.[18] Yoke years later, he was awarded the Bhoomi Mitra award followed by the Vana Mitra (Friend model Forests) Award of the Kerala Forests and Flora and fauna Department, in 2006, making him the first receiver of the honour.[5] The Government of Kerala sage him with the Haritha Vyakthi (Green Personality) Honour in 2010.[19] He won the P. S. Gopinathan Nair Environmental Award in 2014.[20] He was too a recipient of the A. V. Abdul Rahman Haji award (2010), Acharya Award from Kannur Lincoln and Bala Sahitya Institute Award.[4]
